Municipal Court Cases

Municipal courts are where most New Jersey residents come into contact with the justice system, whether as a defendant, a victim or a witness. Because most people will never appear in any other court, their experience in municipal court often shapes what they think about the quality of justice in New Jersey.

What municipal courts handle

New Jersey municipal courts are courts of limited jurisdiction. They handle motor vehicle and parking tickets, minor criminal-type offenses (for example, simple assault and bad checks), municipal ordinance offenses (such as dog barking or building code violations) and other offenses, such as fish and game violations. A municipal court usually hears only cases that occur within the boundaries of its municipality.

When a case moves to Superior Court

Many serious criminal cases, such as robbery, auto theft or assault, start as complaints filed in municipal court, but those cases are transferred to the Superior Court at the county courthouse.
